We both attended a demonstration day by Shozo Michikawa on Saturday 7th October.  This was run by PACS potters, a group within the Petersfield Arts and Crafts Society (PACS), of which we are part!  It was excellent and highly inspirational…

Shozo is able to take clay and transform it in interesting and unusual ways, creating sculptural forms (some of which may also be functional) which are reminiscent (to me) of rock formations torn and distorted through thousands of years by the heat and movement of the earth’s tectoral plates.  It is a much more extreme version of some some other techniques I have seen to add texture and distortion to forms, added together with a great deal of innovation and vision by Shozo.  I just love the natural textures and forms, everyone unique and individual.  Just look at these photos from the event!

I think that we were exceptionally lucky to get such a comprehensive demonstration from Shozo, who is very well respected, and has an exhibition just opening in a London Gallery – Erskine, Hall and Coe (running through till 2nd November 2017).  Go and see it!
